When done right, throw pillows are a budget-friendly way to transform your space but done wrong, they can derail your design.
We’re often asked, What’s the best size throw pillow for my sofa?” “Should my throw pillows match?” Here’s the skinny:
Size matters when it comes to layering your throw pillows on a sofa. Start large, with a 22” or 24” throw pillow on a standard size sofa and then layering up from there. Use smaller 20” throw pillows towards the front of your sofa or add lumbar style pillows.
If you have a sectional sofa, add a large lumbar pillow to give the sofa dimension and create extra comfort for yourself.
As a rule of thumb, using a smaller number of large throw pillows is more visually appealing than several small pillows.
Your pillows don’t need to match. In fact, they shouldn’t match at all. Your space will look much more polished and stylish if your throw pillows are contrasting patterns, textures, and shapes.
And your throw pillows at the opposite ends of your sofa don’t need to match either. You should mix them up too.
The basics on throw pillow colours
If you have a dark-coloured sofa, start with a lighter colour throw pillow as your base and again, mix and match patterns and texture. If your sofa is a light colour, start with a darker colour solid or print and build up from there, and make sure the colours you choose reflect three to four colours from the overall colour pallet of your space.
Now go forth and conquer. Remember, size matters, be bold, mix patterns, colours, and shapes and have fun.
